Mormons do not drink any form of alcohol. This goes back to the understanding that our bodies were created by God and should be taken care of in every way possible. In the Gospel Principles manual it states,
The Lord commands us not to use wine and strong drinks, meaning drinks containing alcohol. The First Presidency has taught that strong drink often brings cruelty, poverty, disease, and plague into the home. It often is a cause of dishonesty, loss of chastity, and loss of good judgment.
Mormons have a strong sense of family, and each of the things listed can lead to destruction of the family and broken homes.
The dangers that come with being under the influence of alcohol should be common knowledge, and unfortunately far too many have felt the painful heartache that comes with tragic alcohol-related accidents. In fact, more Americans have been killed from alcohol-related motor vehicle accidents than have been killed in all the wars America has ever fought.
You may have heard that moderate consumption of alcohol is actually good for your health. There was a study published in the Archives of Neurology, an American Medical Association publication. It was hypothesized that moderate alcohol consumption would slow brain shrinkage, however the opposite turned out to be true. An average brain shrinks at a rate of 2% per decade, while the brain of those consuming alcohol shrinks at a much faster pace.
If you are hosting a party or event and know Mormons will be attending, most Mormons would not be offended by you serving alcohol, though an alternative beverage option is always appreciated.
