Sometimes when people hear about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, they don’t realize that they actually probably know many members of this faith. The Church of Jesus Christ is often inadvertently referred to as the Mormon Church, its members colloquially called Mormons. Mormons do not live apart from others. They dress the same as the people around them, although modestly. Some of you may have heard some weird things about Mormons before, but chances are many of the things you hear may not be true. Let me take a moment to tell you about what I know about Mormons, specifically Mormon boys.

Mormon Boys Are Fun

When I was single, most of the boys I dated were Mormon. And I am here to tell you that Mormon boys are fun! They come up with creative ways to ask you to prom, and they compliment you and make you feel wonderful about yourself. Especially when I was a teenager, most of my dates were group dates, and these were particularly fun at that time in my life. All Mormons have specific standards they strive to live by–like abstaining from alcohol and practicing abstinence from sex outside of marriage–and you shouldn’t for a moment think that these standards impede Mormons’ enjoyment of life. In fact, I’d even venture to say that the Mormon boys I know have more fun than those boys who aren’t of the Mormon faith. Whenever I spent time with my Mormon friends, I knew that I had nothing to worry about. I was safe and could relax and enjoy my time with them.

Mormon Boys Are Clean

One of the things I love about Mormon boys is that they’re clean. Not only do they take care of themselves physically, but their thoughts and actions are clean as well. I don’t have to worry about uncomfortable jokes or inappropriate physicality when I’m around them. As a teenager, this was a great source of relief and comfort for me. I could go into a situation knowing that Mormon boys know the same things I know about what God expects of our behavior, and so I didn’t have to feel uncomfortable about what could happen.

Mormon Boys Are Leaders

The Church of Jesus Christ gives Mormons so many opportunities to develop important leadership skills. Even Mormon teenagers develop these skills. Mormon boys are less likely to go along with the crowd and and more likely to stand up for what they believe in. Mormon boys have a responsibility in The Church of Jesus Christ to serve full-time missions after they graduate from high school. What this means is that they sacrifice two years of their lives to proselytize the gospel of Jesus Christ full-time, often in a completely different part of the world. The youth programs in The Church of Jesus Christ do all they can to prepare Mormon boys for this time.

Once Mormon boys return from their Mormon missions, they are more mature and have a more secure knowledge of the doctrine of Christ. They come back more confident and more apt to take the lead in affecting the world for good. As a young woman in my 20s, I really enjoyed getting to know young men who had returned from missions, because they were involved and invested in edifying the world around them.

Mormon Boys Aren’t Perfect

You may be reading this and thinking that I’m painting an ideal picture, because maybe you know Mormon boys who don’t fit this mold. And that’s okay. Mormon boys aren’t perfect, and they aren’t all the same. Just like boys in any other faith, some boys don’t adhere to standards and don’t live the way you might expect them to. Don’t let this leave a bad taste in your mouth when it comes to The Church of Jesus Christ. The beautiful thing about Christ’s gospel is that it’s rooted in moral agency, or our ability to choose. So Mormon youth are taught about standards and missions and building God’s kingdom, but that doesn’t mean that they have to choose to live the way they’re taught to. Mormon boys and girls can choose whether or not they follow Jesus Christ, and sadly some choose another way.

The other beautiful thing about the gospel is that even when we choose contrary to God’s commandments, Jesus Christ has made it possible for us to repent and start over. All Mormons–boys and girls, grown men and women–all need to take advantage of this gift. Mormons know they aren’t perfect and that they need the grace of Jesus Christ daily.

Take advantage of any opportunity you have to become friends with a Mormon boy, because even though they’re not perfect, they know about Jesus Christ, and that makes them different in a wonderful way.

Some of you probably have friends who are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (often inadvertently referred to as the Mormon church). If you do have Mormon friends, you probably have a good idea of what they represent and how they stand out from the crowd. Some of you, though, may not know many Mormons and may even have some misconceptions about who they are and what they do. Today I’m here to tell you about the Mormon people I know, specifically the Mormon girls.

Mormon Girls Are Driven

Mormon girls have ambition and are driven to succeed. Because of their involvement in the youth programs of The Church of Jesus Christ, Mormon girls are already familiar with setting and achieving goals and serving those around them. They know what it means to be involved and to reach out to others. What Mormon girls learn in church is often translated to what they do in school and work. Mormon girls are encouraged by leadership in The Church of Jesus Christ to pursue education and develop important marketable skills. Mormon girls know the importance of learning and pursue that learning with zeal.

Mormon Girls Are Modest

One of the biggest outward characteristics of Mormon girls is their modesty. Mormon girls follow the counsel outlined in the For the Strength of Youth guidelines issued by The Church of Jesus Christ. Both boys and girls are instructed to wear clothing that is appropriate and respectful to their bodies. Young women especially are counseled to avoid looks that sexualize their bodies and show off their bodies inappropriately. The root of modesty is in knowing your identity as a child of God and understanding that your body is sacred. Mormon girls understand these doctrines and show it in the way they dress.

Dressing modestly doesn’t mean that Mormon girls have to dress frumpy, however. Both Mormon girls and boys can dress modestly and keep up with many trends and styles. In fact, I’ve found that Mormon girls can execute trendy and attractive looks better than many who don’t make modesty a priority.

Mormon Girls Know Who They Are

One of the most important defining characteristics of Mormon girls is that they know exactly who they are: daughters of Heavenly Father. Every week on Sunday, Mormon girls stand and repeat the Young Women theme, which emphasizes their divine heritage as literal spiritual children of God. Because Mormon girls understand where they came from and who they are, they can better approach their challenges with perspective, faith, and courage. Knowing who they are gives Mormon girls lasting peace, even when life gets hard and unpredictable.

Mormon Girls Still Aren’t Perfect

The last thing I’d want you to think is that Mormon girls are perfect, because no one is perfect. Mormon girls can make mistakes just like anyone else. They can even make big mistakes. The beauty of the gospel of Jesus Christ lies in the promise of His redemption. We will all make mistakes, even those of us who have faith in the Savior, and we can find peace in the Redeemer’s promise to give us a fresh start. Perhaps that’s the best thing Mormon girls know: they know that they can be forgiven for their mistakes and start over, because of the grace of Jesus Christ.

Mormon girls are different. Maybe you’ve noticed. What makes them different isn’t necessarily how they dress or how they spend their free time, but rather the most important thing that makes them stand apart is their knowledge that Jesus Christ lives and that He saves.

Mormons Around the World Are All Unique

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignleft wp-image-514" title="love pilot joy" alt="Live in all things outside yourself by love, and you will have joy.
Some people think “Mormons” can’t have fun. I know when I was going to highschool I got this a lot. People thought that because I chose not to drink, smoke, do drugs, participate in inappropriate music and movies, drink coffee and be unchaste that I “wasn’t allowed” to have any fun. And you know what? Reading that list, you might be thinking the exact same thing. But I think when observers of my religion can’t look past what they see as a “list of rules” they really are missing out on the big picture and are just getting a shallow, misunderstood view of things.

Can Mormons Have Fun?

I have lived an extremely fun life. I have experienced things in life that I felt were wondrous and exciting and I am so grateful to have been a part of.

I almost got my hand eaten by a lion in Tunisia; a spontaneous, gargantuan wave took me out during the winter in Cinque Terre, Italy; I’ve rocked out at concerts in Brooklyn; I scaled the back of Lion Hill at waterloo; I’ve gone cliff and waterfall jumping in Eastern Idaho / Western Wyoming; I’ve danced the night away next to the Mediterranean in North Africa; I rode a train in Europe once that actually got lost and ended up in the wrong country; I’ve shopped til’ I dropped in New York; and I definitely love to go to parties. And I am happy to say that I have all these fun life experiences and more without ever having to “break” one of my so-called “rules”.

In fact, I feel that my life choices have enhanced these experiences. Sometimes, people I have met are shocked by the things that I have “never” done. Usually the fact that I have never drank coffee in my life is the biggest shocker of all! But, for me, I am happy about some OTHER things I have “never” done.

I’ve never woken up somewhere I didn’t know and couldn’t remember how I got there. I’ve never regretted a choice or mistake after a night of “partying”. I’m grateful to have avoided addictions in my life that can come from certain lifestyle choices. Foregoing certain media venues makes me feel secure – not left out when I don’t participate in violence and sexual content. And I’ve never had to spend a fortune on drive through coffee! (I say playfully).

Mutual Respect: You Don’t Have to Be the Same To Have Fun

I understand that not everyone has lived a life with similar standards. And I truly do not believe that I am better than anyone who doesn’t follow a similar code. I studied abroad in Florence, Italy during college. My greatest experience there was rooming with wonderful, beautiful women from schools all across the U.S. I attended a private, church University at home – which I loved – but I was so happy I was able to add my Florence time with members not of my faith to my educational experience as well.

When I first moved to Florence, I will admit I was nervous about what people might think of me because of some of my more obvious lifestyle differences. It’s not something I feel I have to highlight or go around and announce, but in a wine and cheese culture it becomes pretty obvious, pretty quick. I would never have changed my standards, but I certainly didn’t want anyone to think I was weird either.

My experience turned out to be just the opposite! My roommates were the most kind, respectful people to me. They never pressured me to do anything I didn’t want to and we’re completely respectful and understanding when I didn’t participate in certain things. In fact, one time we had a visitor to the apartment who tried to pressure me into drinking wine and my roommates all defended me and basically told the guy to “back off”.

We went out all the time with lots of our good guy friends from school and my memories are of kicking soccer balls in piazzas, dancing in funny Italian discos all night, traveling, getting gyros at 2:00 in the morning and laughing our heads off all the time. I respected their choices and they respected mine and when we were together, we never felt like everybody had to be doing the same thing.

In The Church of Jesus Christ one big part of our standards is being in good places and surrounding ourselves with good friends in order to help ourselves make good choices. In all my fun in life there have been times when I have left a party, walked out of a movie or declined invitations to certain events. One reason I loved my still strong friendships from Florence is that those sweet friends never tried to persuade me to do something I felt was wrong.

“You Can Have a Good Time”

Former President of The Church once said to the youth:

You can have a good time. Of course you can! We want you to have fun. We want you to enjoy life. We do not want you to be prudes. We want you to be robust and cheerful, to sing and dance, to laugh and be happy.

But in so doing, be humble and be prayerful, and the smiles of heaven will fall upon you (Gordon B. Hinckley, “A Prophets, Counsel and Prayer for Youth”, Ensign, January 2001).

I do believe in high standards and try my very best to uphold them. I believe they bless my life. An overview of some church standards can be found in the For the Strength of Youth publication.

I’ve never felt like my standards have inhibited me from having fun and I truly believe that this lifestyle can coincide with a robust, fun enjoyable life.

For budding celebrities like David Archuleta, it’s putting education and/or career on hold to preach the gospel.

The apostle John wrote: “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world” (1 John 2:15). Taking this scripture literally,we may think that the Lord does not want us to have any affection for those around us including our family and material possessions. This is not true. As the following verse clearly states, it is the “lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life” that we should avoid. (See verse 16.)

Of course, we can love our families and friends. You can love your house, your job, your shoes, or even your favorite songs. Some of us hold in high regard non-corporeal objects such as beauty, education, fame, and political power. Most of these things are important. However, none of these should take the place of God in our lives, not even spouses, parents, and children.

The Savior said: “If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple (Luke 14:26).”The Apostle Paul taught that we should set our affection on things above and not on things on earth (Colossians 3:2). In the Book of Mormon, Jacob taught: “But before ye seek for riches, seek ye for the Kingdom of God.” (See Jacob 2:18.)

I love my family. I have caring parents and nine wonderful siblings that I love very much. I also have nieces and nephews in whom I see my younger self growing up. I love them too, and have a special place in my heart for them. My wife is the one that I love the most. She taught me how to love and appreciate the little things we have. She taught me how to always say “please”, “thank you”, and “sorry” from the heart.

When I think about the people I love, I am reminded of the Father whose love I could never comprehend, who “spared not His own Son, but delivered him up for us all” (Romans 8:32). He has repeatedly declared in the scriptures that we are the reason he created the universe. His love for us exceeds His love for all of His other creations. President Diether F. Uchtdorf, taught that “compared to God, man is nothing; yet we are everything to God.”

As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I believe that just as God’s love for us enabled Him to sacrifice his Only-Begotten Son, we too must be willing to sacrifice all things and love Him more than anything that the world can offer. We must not be like the Rich Young Ruler who, despite his professed love for the Savior, walked away sorrowfully because he loved his riches more. Rather, we must constantly make an inventory of our lives and see to it that we are keeping God first at all times, in all thing, and in all places.
